The ASTM F1216-99 “Standard Practice for Rehabilitation of Existing Pipelines and Conduits by the Inversion and Curing of a Resin-Impregnated Tube” describes several tests applicable to cure in place pipes (CIPP). One test described in this standard refers to the long-term flexural modulus, with the aim to determine a conservative value of cured in place pipe structure after 50 years of service.
This long-term modulus test involves determining flexural modulus of elasticity (and strength) in accordance with ASTM D790-99 “Standard Test Methods for Flexural Properties of Unreinforced and Reinforced Plastics and Electrical Insulation Materials, procedure A (3 point loading)”.
Specifically, the procedure involves measuring the initial flexural modulus of the CIPP liners, cured as they would be in service, then applying a conservative modulus reduction factor to estimate the expected flexural modulus at the end of a 50 year service life. In the absence of specific long-term test data indicating otherwise, this modulus reduction factor is prescribed in ASTM F1216-99 to be 0.5 or. That is, this standard assumes that the flexural modulus of elasticity of cured in place pipe liners drop 50% over a 50 year service life.
ASTM F1216-99 states in Table 1 (p.2) that the initial modulus of elasticity of the CIPP liner
material (E) is to be a minimum of 250,000 psi. This is equivalent to approximately 1723MPa. It also states that the minimum initial flexural strength is to be approximately 31MPa . As shown in the official test data of Nuflow Technologies cured resin and liner report, the initial modulus of elasticity and strength values for the current Nuflow epoxy / felt CIPP liner are well above these minimum requirements.
ASTM F1216-99 prescribes in Table X 1.1 (p.6) that the conservative 50 year long-term modulus of elasticity, EL, is ½ of the initial modulus of elasticity, E.
According to this prescription, and taking the value of E as shown in the official test data of Nuflow Technologies cured resin and liner, the long-term flexural modulus of elasticity of the epoxy / felt liner, EL, is determined to well in excess of the minimum value of EL of 125,000 psi (861 MPa) prescribed in ASTM F1216-99.
The initial and 50 year long-term flexural modulus of elasticity, E and EL, have been determined for Nuflow's epoxy / felt CIPP liner. Both E and EL have been determined to be well in excess of the minimum values described in the ASTM F1216-99 standard. Thus enabling Nuflow Technologies and its franchised partners to offer a 50 year guarantee on our Blueline ® product to its satisfied clients.
