Work Performed
70m of 150mm earthenware sewer, 60m of 100mm earthenware sewer and 5m of 100mm copper pipe sewer.
Jezzine Barracks has been used for defence purposes since the late 1800’s and is now a Museum. A broken sewer stopped the $40 million dollar redevelopment plan.
While renovating the buildings, it was discovered that major infiltration was occurring in all of the sewer lines. A quick solution was sought as it had the potential to stop all other works from being performed. Being an historic site required extreme care not disturb the structural integrity of the buildings.
CCTV & Relining
The camera inspection showed that all the earthenware pipes were either cracked or displaced, with a large amount of infiltration and exfiltration. The sewer was causing an environmental issue with sewerage leaching into the surrounding ground water and conversely salty groundwater infiltrating back into the pipe, adding to the cost of sewerage treatment. All the pipes required cleaning by high pressure jet, before final measurements and installation of liners could commence. The three man crew installed separate liners into junctions, traps and around multiple bends over a period of four days, completing the reline of the entire sewer.
Reline Versus Dig?
Due to its historical significance, the alternative of excavating and replacing the damaged pipes was not an option. This would have caused lengthy delays to the redevelopment plans and site works, as it could have involved archaeological monitoring of any disturbed area of ground of this heritage listed site. Due to the location of the pipes and where they ran, many of the floor surfaces would have had to be removed. Tens of thousands of dollars were saved over a traditional dig and replace, under the assumption that the heritage foundation allowed for digging at all.
